I do not know much about rugby. It looks a lot like American football but more physical. When I see it on the telly while channel-surfing, I change the channel at once because I find the sport so violent. The infamous Philippine Volcanoes billboards which has now been removed (Thanks for nothing, Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian!) made me aware that we have our own team. Those guys are H-O-T! When I was invited to a Philippine Volcanoes event care of Globe, I just had to be there.
Globe has sponsored Philippine rugby for 2 years now. The telephone company even has its own rugby team called Globe Immortal composed of Globe employees. Wanting to support lesser-known sports, Globe recently decided to sponsor Philippine Volcanoes as they compete in the Men’s Asian Football Rugby Union (ARFU) 7s in Shanghai, China.
I learned that our Philippine National Rugby Union (PRFU), aka Philippine Volcanoes, is very promising. The Philippine Volcanoes Men’s rose to Division 1 this year from being just in Division 4 back in 2008. We should also know more about Philippine Volcanoes Women’s because they won the 7s Division B final at the AFU Women’s 7. Because of this, they were invited to the prestigious Hong Kong 7s tournament which our Men’s 7s team is aiming for.
Not only do these handsome men play rugby well, they also give back to the community. The Philippine Volcanoes teaches rugby in orphanages and the Smokey Mountain. Some of the kids now belong to the junior clubs which compete abroad. PRFU brought Bahay Bata players to England and they won 2 games! Us blogger girls had the time of our lives during the Globe event and our admiration for them grew stronger when we found out about their sense of social responsibility.
Of course we had to have our photos taken with them. Also a solo photo of me flanked by two gorgeous Volcanoes!
That is my wallpaper now!
